RIP LIKINGA REDO MAGENZA (ZAIKO LANGA LANGA)

On Thursday August 8th, legendary Zaiko Langa Langa vocalist and songwriter Likinga Redo passed away.   Apparently he had been ill for a while and went to France to get treatment. Unfortunately he still succumbed to the illness. I will be posting more on this sad news tomorrow once I have gathered more information.

Until then I leave you with one of his compositions from his time with Zaiko Langa Langa in the 70s. The beautiful song Viya.

RIP Bimi Ombale UNE PERTE POUR LA RUMBA CONGOLAISE

After a long battle with an unspecified illness, renown vocalist and song writer formally of the legendary band Zaiko Langa Langa, Bimi Ombale passed away April 29th at a clinic in Kinshasa, DRC. This comes as very sad news to us here at Tambour d'Afrique where we are definitely Zaiko-centric.
Bimi, born Andre Bimi Ombale Mwana Wabi, had a beautiful voice and sang lead on many of Zaiko's greatest hits of the 70s and 80s such as "Ando", "Zena", "Lisapo"& my personal favorite "Sandra Lina". By the end of the 70s when many of Zaiko's staple artists such as Papa Wemba and Pepe Felly left the band Bimi remained with Jossart Nyoka Longo to front the group.

In 1988 along with Zaiko Langa Langa he released the album "Sentiment Bimi" which features a medley of some of his greatest hits up until that point.

His other solo albums include "Mbengele Zouk" (1989) and "Balle de Match" (1990).

Bitter disputes during the late 80s caused Zaiko Langa Langa to finally split into two camps Zaiko Langa Langa Nkola Mboka & Zaiko Famillia Dei of which he joined the latter. He wrote many songs for the band. He also sang with Clan Langa Langa at one point. He went on to release music though the 90s. He eventually became a gospel artist.

His contribution to Zaiko Langa Langa and the legacy of Congolese music will live on forever. May he rest in peace.

TAMBOUR D'AFRIQUE 06.19.20

I've been struggling with technical difficulties as far as recording the show and also with streaming the show. The music sharing site, imusictweet.com, has suddenly lowered the amount of megabytes one can upload so I can't stream from there anymore. To make up for it I have made a 'video' of the show so that fans can still listen to the show while logged onto the internet. I hope you enjoy this next episode. I also invite you all to listen to Tambour d'Afrique every Saturday night from 10pm to 12am (NY EST) live at www.RadioTriomphe.com

Biloko Ngeli Ngeli...

I don't know what the weather is like where you are but here in NY it is finally hot outside! After a long winter it's hard to not get excited when unseasonably warm weather comes around. I love music all year around of course, but for some reason its much more enjoyable in nice weather.

Which brings me to the song I was just listening to. It was written by my late great uncle Matima Mpiosso of Zaiko Langa Langa and it is called "Kin Kiesse". This song just reminds me of good times and sunny days like today. Kin Kiesse means sweet Kinshasa. The song was written in homage to the golden era of prosperity that then Zaire was going through at the time. "Biloko Ngeli Ngeli" every thing shiny, everything good. I want to dedicate this song to everyone feeling good about life and to Matima Mpiosso who would have been 58 this year on April 14th (He passed away May 26th 1996). Here is the live from Ghana version off the "Zaiko-Ghana" album released in 1976.

Zaiko Langa Langa - Eboza...

A couple episodes ago I had to make a mix based off the songs that Guy 'Mwana Mboka' played on the show that night. As I was reading the list I saw the song "EBOZA" written on the paper but for the life of me could not find the song on my harddrive for some reason. I thought maybe Guy meant "UPOSA" and posted that song instead lol.
Well I was wrong and I found the song Eboza. This song comes from Zaiko's most electric era, the mid-70s. This is the era that brought Zaiko Langa Langa it's notoriety for creating exciting compositions based on love, mixed with social commentary, tight harmonies and grooves fit for getting down. I have yet to hear a song from them from this time period that I didn't love. Eboza is no exception. Please listen and enjoy...

Sunday Nite Videos & Emission 10.13.07

If you missed it and/or you just want to hear it over and over again, here is last night's show.
Emission 10.13.07

Last week Guy introduced us all to a musician and vocalist by the name of Mimitah. Mimitah Bofondo is 25 years old and resides in London, England. She sings, composes songs and also plays bass guitar. She recently released the single Tata Muasi, which Guy played on last weeks show. I found out about Mimitah through Myspace and once I heard her music I told my dad he HAD to play her song! She definitely puts a fresh spin on the music. Her voice is a rare one in today's musical climate. She's the only female Congolese artist I know of that is as young as she is and it gives me great pride that she is so talented and she takes the composition of music seriously. She carries the torch for the Congolese Women musicians and artists in what is now the 5th Generation of 'Modern' Congolese music, in my humble opinion. I can see her being a musical force internationally. We all here at Tambour d'Afrique wish her all the best.

Here are some video clips of her. The first is a short documentary and the second is the Tata Muasi (Remix).

Here is a clip of Zaiko Langa Langa as headed by Nyoka Longa Jossart in a recent concert. Even to this day Zaiko Langa Langa never fails to entertain with the dance moves. Enjoy.

New Show Tonight @ 10pm....

Its been a whole week since the last entry. I've been kinda busy with work and recording and completely lost track of the blog. Last week the Madilu System Memorial Special re-aired because Guy was on vacation. Tonight he will be bringing us all a brand new show. I just got home from visiting with some friends so I have no idea what he has planned for today. I usually have an idea if I'm home since he compiles his track list here in the house. So basically today I will be tuning in with fresh ears with the rest of you all. As a true fan of the show (Not just because the host is my dad haha) not knowing what is going to be played adds an extra element of excitement for me. I'm positive that we will be blessed with good music and I look forward to hearing what Guy has in store.

I still need to introduce you all to some artists that were played in the past few weeks from Guy's myspace friends list. Keep an eye out for that.

REMEMBER: Tune into RadioTriomphe.Com @ 10pm NY time (Eastern Standard) to hear a brand new episode.

Before the show begins take the time to listen to this selection, Lisumu by Zaiko Langa Langa. Written by my late great uncle Matima Mpiosso (R.I.P.) Peace and have
a wonderful weekend.

Mokili Echanger

Last week Guy played the song Mokili Echanger by Zaiko Langa Langa. The lead singer on this song has a very distinct voice, he was once in Viva La Musica and made a switch to Zaiko Langa Langa and eventually Langa Langa Stars. Unfortunately he passed away August 23, 2000 of unspecified causes. He is known as "La Voix Cassée" (The Broken Voice). If you know who this singer is, email Guy at guyangrand1@hotmail.com or call in the show at show time Saturday 10pm - 12am @ Radio Triomphe. The phone number to the radio station is 718-469-7277. Remember you must call during show time in order to get through. Thank you to all the listeners around the WORLD who listen and tune into the blog. Always feel free to reach host Guy Angrand at his email or www.myspace.com/guyangrand

Sunday Nite Videos...& Last Nite's Show

Sorry so late with it. Here is a link to last night's show which was really great. There were no random sounds in the recording (lol) and the show recorded perfectly.

Emission 07-28-07

Here are two great videos I found on You Tube.
Both songs played on the 07/21/07 show...

First up is MASSU sung by Jolie Detta for Franco & TP OK Jazz. Jolie Detta was the only woman to ever sing lead for Franco. In this clip she is backed up by Yondo Sister's twin sister Yondo Nyota. Both Detta and Nyota have since passed away...R.I.P. I love the song. From my limited understanding of Lingala it sounds like she is singing about her bestfriend. Its a really nice song and the dancing is great. Thank you to youtuber papanzinga for the clip...

This next clip is one of the legendary band Zaiko Langa Langa in 1975. From Left to Right the singers present in this clip are Lengi Lenga, Mashakado, Nyoka Longo and Likinga. Pepe Manuaku is on lead guitar and Ilo Pablo on the drums. If I am not mistaken Uncle Bapusse is on Bass in this clip. I LOOOOVE this song so much and the performance is spectacular. The dancing is great. I think I might have even posted this video before but it's great enough to post twice. I love it that much lol. In this clip they sing BELI MASHAKADO. Thank you to youtuber likinga (I often wonder if he is of any relation to likinga himself. I've asked through youtube but got no response...) Enjoy the clips...

New Look...Again

Yesterday as I was trying to make changes to the webpage I somehow ruined the format of the html. I am pretty much illiterate in html and so I had no idea how to fix what I messed up so I had to start from scratch. The site I got the template from is no longer up so I couldn't repost it. I hope this one isn't too hard on the eyes. I like the format but the background color isn't what I wish it were. Anyway over time the site's look will probably be changing a few times until I find something really nice again. Still working on getting last weeks show to you. Stay tuned. For now I will leave you with some songs I recently acquired...

This first song is by Dindo Yogo, singer of Zaiko Langa Langa fame. Its from his solo release "Chante Piscos" which was released in 1990.
DL:Sharufa

This next song is from the Bimi Ombale led Zaiko Langa Langa project, "Sentiment Bimi" which was released in 1988. DL: Moloki

This last selection is from the band Los Nickelos de Zato, Zizi & Jo Rino. From a compilation of their songs of the late '60s. DL: Bolingo Ya Telephone (Telephone Love)

Enjoy the songs and new scenery...PEACE

C'est La Verite...

This is my favorite song of the moment.
C'est La Verite by the legendary band Zaiko Langa Langa.
The melody and hook are very catchy and make for an excellent example as to why Zaiko Langa Langa was so great. Listen and download song here:

"C'est La Verite...rien que la verite" means "It's true, it's nothing but the truth". The lead singer is singing about how real his love is for his girl. He isn't sure if she loves him back but he claims that it is true that he wants her. Nothing but the truth. This song is the truth. Enjoy.

I still haven't had the chance to convert those past shows from audiotape to mp3 yet. That is definitely coming soon this week. Stay tuned. Thank you for your continued support. PEACE...

Sunday Nite Videos...on a MONDAY MORNING

Yesterday after posting a blog entry I went to the Haitian Day Parade of Unity here in Spring Valley, NY. There is a very large Haitian community here so the event drew a lot of people. Guy's sister Dr. Danielle A. Bright, who passed last year due to cancer, was honored by both the town and HAPA (Haitian American Parents Association), the organization that she birthed some 16 years ago. It was a very nice event and it was great to see so many happy faces celebrating their HAITIAN-NESS (the word is made up but you get me lol).

Anyhow when I got home I forgot ALLLL about Sunday Nite Videos so I will bring to you some videos today...

This next video is one of the few songs I remember vividly from my childhood. Me and my older sister loved this song. I've seen it labeled 'SVP MBEY' (Sil Vous Ple?). I love this performance. I love to see how the audiences reacted to the music back then.

ZAIKO LANGA LANGA...

I've been listening to this next song a lot lately...

MBILIA BEL - FAUX PAS

The sound quality is poor on this one but the performance is fantastic. You can hear a better version of the song here:

Introducing PEPE FELLY

It seems I made a mistake. It seems the clip of Papa Wemba and band singing Monama is not Zaiko Langa Langa after all but Viva La Musica . Sorry about the mix up

...

Introducing: Pepe Felly Manuaku Waku

Pepe Felly is also an original band member. Those who write up on Zaiko Langa Langa tend to only mention the names of those who sang upfront at one point or another. But Pepe Felly has been a vital part of Zaiko Langa Langa from the beginning and is responsible for changing Congolese music by introducing the Sebene to the song format. The sebene is a melody on two or four measurements, looped to express what the singer cannot express with words. It's the expression of the songs emotion through melody. This part of the song allows the music to connect even more with the audience. No, Pepe Felly was not a singer but as lead guitar soloist, he was definitely a star in the Zaiko Langa Langa line up just like Papa Wemba or Nyoka Longo.

Pepe Felly was born, Felix Pedro Manuaku in 1954 in Congo-Kin. The bio on his official website (which is in french) doesn't specify a city or village. He was born second in a family of 7 boys and 5 girls. As a child he attended The Academy of Beautiful Arts of Kinshasa. He began his career with Zaiko at the tender age of 15 in 1969. By 1973, at only 19 years old, Pepe Felly was named the best guitarist of the third generation of modern Congolese music by the Congolese press. In 1977 he played with Tabu Ley at Festac of Lagos, Nigera, recorded "Love Me Love Me" with reggae sensation, Jimmy Cliff and the French singer, Jacques Higelin. His guitar dominated Zaiko's sound until he left the group in 1980 at which time he formed Grand Zaiko Wawa. From '85 to '88 he toured with Grand Zaiko Wawa through Congo-Brazzaville, Gabon, Rawanda, Burundi, Niger, Switzerland, Belguim and France. (Zaiko Langa Langa has splintered into several spin off orchestras by this time. These 'splinters' will be covered over time...)

In 1989 Felly relocated to Switzerland where he took part in workshops of The Lausanne School of Jazz and giving lessons of guitar at Hello Jazz with American saxophonist Robin Kenyatta.

2005 found Pepe Felly meeting Narcisse Okon, an event coordinator, concert programmer, and DJ from Ivory Coast. Together they form Pepe Felly & Band who bring forth L'Afrique C'est Chic. L'Afrique C'est Chic is a showcase of African music from across the continet which seeks to be an international annual music festival.

Today Pepe Felly still lives in Switzerland and continues to play music. Tomorrow I will transcribe Show #9, the interview between Guy Angrand, Pierre Mbala and himself which goes more into what he's doing at the present time and talks about the history of Zaiko from a first hand experience. Also a few mp3s to go along with it. Stay tuned. PEACE...
