A NEW ERA IN THE INTERNET RADIO HISTORY
www.radiokilim.com www.radiokilim.net
For 17 years, I was the DJ of the radio show Tambour d'Afrique, the Palmares of Congolese Rumba at Radio Triomphe. My late daughter, Stacey Bazu Angrand, also known as Sha Mecca, helped me put together the radio show as well as this blog , which is dedicated to Congolese rumba and soukous music past and present. I was the DJ of the Tambour d'Afrique, the Palmares of Congolese Rumba to continue this show that my late daughter, Stacey Bazu Angrand, under the stage name Sha Mecca, helped me put together. She also established this blog for the radio show. She was also in contact with many of the new artists that she introduced to the radio show and . I will be forever be in debt to her as she introduced me to contemporary artists like Fally Ipupa, Deplick Pomba, Reddy Amisi, as well as new music from more established acts such as Youlou Mabiala, Madilu System, and even some classicsclassicsa by Ntesa Dalienst, which I rediscovered through her research.

In 2023 the management of Radio Triomphe decided to close the station in Brooklyn. Despite everything, I continued to do the show live on my Facebook Page but I had to deal with licensing and other issues. Today the BAOBAB NETWORK has offered this opportunity with Radio Kilim to go even on a bigger scale.

Thank you Radio Triomphe for helping continue the spreading of African music, particularly Congolese music in all its adopted form in the diaspora. The migration of many artists toward Kinshasa, like Manu Dibango, Myriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela and the exodus orf Congolese musicians like Samba Mapangala, Orchestre Les Kinois, and later Virunga, the Super Mazembe de Matadi toward Kenya and other countries in East Africa. The emigration to Ivory Coast of Sam Mangwana, Lokassa Ya Mbongo, the great bassist Ngouma Lokito, and others who formed the Quatres Etoiles also left their marks as a rhythm based on Cavacha, Soukous and Ndombolo called Coupe Decale has taken hold.
Our mission remains the same, we will continue to promote Rumba and other Afro-Caribbean rythms with programs that will feature, Congolese Rumba, Konpa, Zouk, Salsa, Bachata, Meringue, Reggae, Afrobeats, AfroCongo and other rythms. The blog is back and we are committed to keep it running. We will appreciate any donations through our website www.radiokilim.com or www.radiokilim.net. Your suggestions and participation are welcome.
Thank you to The Zhaitiens et Zhaitiennes of Congo led by our President Alex Anselme for their continued support. We are the children of the Haitian professionals who went to the Democratic Republic of Congo during the 1960s who filled a big gap created by the Belgian Apartheid colonial educational system.

JAPANESE - CONGOLESE CONNECTION
Over the years as I have been (re)discovering Congolese music, I have noticed a cultural connection between Congo and Japan. Years ago when my younger brother was taking martial arts classes he had to learn a whole list of Japanese words and the numbers. My mother (RIP) looking at the list remarked how the Japanese language reminded her a lot of Lingala and how many Congolese names sound Japanese and vice versa. Ever since that conversation I noticed the same but I still didn't know the extent to which that similarities
Before that when I was a kid one of the many records played in our house was Zaiko Langa Langa's Nippon Banzai au Japon album. It never really occured to me until years later that Zaiko Langa Langa was a huge success internationally and had a fanbase in Japan and that Congolese music in general is embraced there.
Since seeing the album cover for Zaiko Langa Langa's Nippon Banzai au Japon I've been curious to find out how popular Congolese music is in Japan. When I heard "Elo" for the first time and realized that a stanza was sung in Japanese my curiosity grew even more. The Japanese influence and love is shown even in the opening theme song of Tambour d'Afrique 'Bakwetu'
My curiosity was satisfied to a degree when I stumbled upon the album 'Bana Kinshasa Bana Japon' by the band Orchestre Yoka Choc du Japon online @ ylow.blogspot.com.
If anyone has any information on this band please feel free to leave comments.
I downloaded their album from ylow.blogspot.com (a wonderful collection of world and african music over there. please give them a visit).
Nalali Mpongi
music being superb the lyrics to this song are outstanding. My father tells me Nyoka Longo wrote the song for his older sister who was like a mother for him. The song, from what I understand, is about the journey he took from the spirit world to life. Nalali Mpongi means I sleep, tired, Author and composer Nyoka Longo. Guitare solo by Pepe Felly Manuaku.

FUKICHIMA DAIICHI NUCLEAR DISASTER IN JAPAN Our Hearts Go Out To Japan...as reported by Ms. Bazu March 2011
having their own fascination with Japan. It makes me sad to say that a tragedy like
the 8.9 earthquake, the tsunami that followed AND the threat of nuclear meltdown (!!!) in and around the Tokyo area is what reminded me of my idea for that post.
About 5 years ago I noticed the connection in the Zaiko Langa Langa song "Elo". In the classic song the vocalists sing a few lines in what I *assume* is in Japanese (I've never confirmed what the lyrics in mean). Now when I first started putting those location maps on this site I noticed right away that we had several hits from Japan. "Elo" to this day is the most downloaded song on this website with several hits and I always wondered (and still do) how big of a hit this song might have been in Japan.
Before THAT there was the Nippon Banzai album that I grew up listening to. It never occurred to me until years later that the album was an actual recording of a live show in Japan. All of this leads me to believe that Congolese music has had a following in Japan for a while (much in the same way that Pop, Dancehall and Hip Hop have niche followings within the Japanese population).
I was extremely pleased to find that my hypothesis was right.
If anyone has any information on this band please feel free to leave comments.

It is with deep regret to inform the members of this forum that Ms. Stacey Bazu also known on this forum as Mwana Nsalu passed away Monday from breast cancer at age 35. A lot of us remember Ms. Bazu as an original member from previous forums where we've grown to know each other as a collective group for over 15 years. It is on these forums where she wowed us with her talents as a Congolese-American singing songs in Lingala and posting them online and displaying her passion for Odemba/Rhumba music. I am utterly heartbroken and saddened over this news. She leaves behind her father, Guy Angrand and a young son.

TRIBUTE FOR MS BAZU
I am going to give tribute before I release another post. I am giving tribute to a lady that I had a pleasure for corresponing in some forums.
Her name is Ms Bazu. She was actually a singer who did cover songs. She had a very beautiful voice.
She was the daughter of radio host of Guy Angrand. Guy Angrand was a musician who once played with Pepe Felly of Grand Zaiko Wawa.
Part of the reason that I joined some forums was because I saw her posts and I was inspired to join. She had great insight into Congolese Music.
Recently she did a few songs that I have heard. It was pretty good and impressive.
This news shocks me and reminds me how unpredictable life can be.
I saw this video, I am amazed how good of a singer she was. It is ashame. She had a beautiful gift of singing. But I will cherish more when I see this video.
Rest in peace Ms. BAZU. You will always be in my heart. Your friends and Your family will keep in their minds every day. Thank you for your service that you gave us.

RADIO KILIM SALUTES PEPE FELI MANUAKU ET LE GRAND ZAIKO WAWA///YA KALA NA OYA SIKA
Pepe Felly is also an original band member. Those who write up on Zaiko Langa Langa tend to only mention the names of those who sang upfront at one point or another. But Pepe Felly has been a vital part of Zaiko Langa Langa from the beginning and is responsible for changing Congolese music by introducing the Sebene to the song format. The sebene is a melody on two or four measurements, looped to express what the singer cannot express with words. It's the expression of the songs emotion through melody. This part of the song allows the music to connect even more with the audience. No, Pepe Felly was not a singer but as lead guitar soloist, he was definitely a star in the Zaiko Langa Langa line up just like Papa Wemba or Nyoka Longo.
Pepe Felly was born, Felix Pedro Manuaku in 1954 in Congo-Kin. The bio on his official website (which is in french) doesn't specify a city or village. He was born second in a family of 7 boys and 5 girls. As a child he attended The Academy of Beautiful Arts of Kinshasa. He began his career with Zaiko at the tender age of 15 in 1969. By 1973, at only 19 years old, Pepe Felly was named the best guitarist of the third generation of modern Congolese music by the Congolese press. In 1977 he played with Tabu Ley at Festac of Lagos, Nigera, recorded "Love Me Love Me" with reggae sensation, Jimmy Cliff and the French singer, Jacques Higelin. His guitar dominated Zaiko's sound until he left the group in 1980 at which time he formed Grand Zaiko Wawa. From '85 to '88 he toured with Grand Zaiko Wawa through Congo-Brazzaville, Gabon, Rawanda, Burundi, Niger, Switzerland, Belguim and France. (Zaiko Langa Langa has splintered into several spin off orchestras by this time. These 'splinters' will be covered over time...)
In 1989 Felly relocated to Switzerland where he took part in workshops of The Lausanne School of Jazz and giving lessons of guitar at Hello Jazz with American saxophonist Robin Kenyatta.
2005 found Pepe Felly meeting Narcisse Okon, an event coordinator, concert programmer, and DJ from Ivory Coast. Together they form Pepe Felly & Band who bring forth L'Afrique C'est Chic. L'Afrique C'est Chic is a showcase of African music from across the continet which seeks to be an international annual music festival.
Pepe Felly still travels to Switzerland and continues to play music.Today Pepe Felly Manuaku perfoms in Kinshasa, R.D.C. with his band GRAND ZAIKO WAWA and the Band's New Album "JEU DE SIX" featuring their lead singer TATYI LA DOUCE a reincarnation of the styles of Myriam Makeba, Abeti, Mpongo Love, Etisomba etc... Radio Kilim salutes one of the gratest solo guitarist of Congolese Rumba.
